New Zealand's only native palm species. It's a slow-growing tree, typically reaching heights of 10-15 meters, with a smooth, ringed trunk and long, arching fronds. The fronds can grow up to 3 meters long and feature numerous narrow leaflets. The nikau palm produces pinkish-purple flowers and bright red, cylindrical fruits that take about a year to ripen. Prefers semi-shade when young, but can tolerate full sun at maturity. Plant in deep, well-drained soil.
