A large evergreen native tree of New Zealand, characterized by its tall, straight trunk, smooth dark brown bark, and drooping, willow-like leaves. It is a significant component of New Zealand's lowland forests, often found in mixed conifer-broadleaf forests as a canopy or understory tree. The tree can reach heights of 25-30 metres, with a broad canopy up to 15 metres wide, sometimes with a buttressed base.
