A large, native New Zealand evergreen tree with distinctive features. It's characterized by its large, leathery, oval leaves that are shiny dark green above and dull blue-green below, often with reddish-brown hairs along the veins. The tree produces olive-shaped, purple fruits that ripen in winter, providing a food source for native birds like kererū. Taraire is a canopy tree, reaching heights of up to 22 metres, and has smooth, dark brown bark.
