It is characterized by its feathery, flattened, scale-like leaves, reddish-brown bark, and a pyramidal shape when young, which matures to a rounded form. It's a slow-growing tree, eventually reaching 20-35 metres in height and 3-10 meters in width. It's found in lowland and mixed broadleaf/hardwood forests, often near the coast and sometimes alongside Kauri trees. It is hardy and tolerates full sun to partial shade.
